3 WARREN (RICK). The Purpose Driven Life What On Earth Am I Here For?
Grand Rapids, Michigan: Zondervan , 2004. Softbound Very Good
333pp

The Purpose Driven Life states that it is "a guide to a 40-day spiritual journey that will enable you to discover the answer to life's most important question: What on earth am I here for?" (p. 9). On the positive side the 40 short chapters give a strong emphasis towards a biblical for a Christ centred focus to life. It is well written dealing with important issues in Christian living, worship and evangelism. No one can argue with statements like "God is not just the starting point of your life he is the source of it…you must turn to God's word, not the world's wisdom. You must build your life on eternal truths, not pop psychology, success-motivation or inspirational stores". The book is best described as light though certainly does not side step the major issues in our walk with God. Nevertheless the desire to be relevant and communicate truth effectively has I believe watered down aspects of the truth to a degree where the gospel is seriously compromised. Truths such as repentance, the attributes of God, sin, the wrath of God have been substituted for a gospel of easy believism and a focus on the result of the gospel enhancing personal self-image, fulfilment and growth. Warren uses over 1200 scripture references throughout. I consider a strength. Nevertheless the use of variant non literal translations as proof texts combined with poor or insufficient exegesis has result in some of Warren's statements not being verified biblically. Warren's market-driven mindset can I believe be forgiven. We may not like it but many other ministries adopt marketing styles without any serious comprises of the gospel. Thewre is little difference in what Warren says for example; "I know all the great things that are going to happen to you. They happened to me, and I have never been the same since I discovered the purpose of my life" (p. 12) and a preacher says before each sermon "This is the greatest truth you will hear" or "If the church grasped this truth …." Was the marketing campaign publisher inspired and driven or author driven? The paraphernalia surrounding The Purpose Driven Life suggests a strong publisher orientation. The numerical measure of success is strong but is this that much different even in our churches. Michael Plant Christian Books Australia
